What is male menopause?
There is no medical diagnosis for so-called male menopause. It is actually a misnomer for a gradual decline in testosterone as a man enters his 50s. The name was coined because many of the symptoms of low testosterone or low T, share the spotlight with certain female menopausal symptoms.
The various signs and symptoms of low T, which some people have labelled male menopause, include hot flashes, moodiness, loss of muscle mass, and dry, thin skin, and the beginnings of possible erectile dysfunction – ED.
Depression and fatigue may also set in as a result of a change in male hormone levels, which is also a classic symptom of female menopause symptoms and a change in estrogen levels.
Why testosterone is so important to counter these symptoms
A good level of testosterone is necessary for the following reasons:
- Plays a major role in maintaining sex drive and function. Low T can make it difficult to get, or maintain an erection.
- Testosterone helps to regulate your mood and helps to keep anxiety and depression levels down. Common symptoms of depression include persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emptiness, are magnified by low T issues.
- Reduces stress and anxiety, as you may have begun to feel that you have lost control of your emotions.
- As estrogen does in women, testosterone helps the body maintain healthy energy levels. Low T may cause you to struggle to find the energy to manage your normal activities.
In older men, some of these symptoms in males, may be of a medical nature, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or even diabetes. A visit to the doctor, who will order blood tests, the results of which, can determine what the actual issue is. Bear in mind that there is medical diagnosis for anything termed “male menopause.”
Treatment
Medical treatments might include hormonal therapy, or antidepressant drugs – both of which may present side effects difficult to cope with. Experts agree that lifestyle habits play a big part in reducing and controlling the symptoms, especially if they are interfering with your normal life. Your doctor may advise you to embrace a healthy lifestyle, follow a healthy diet, and get plenty of exercise.
Some new studies have revealed that therapy may help with certain of the conditions, like such as fear of what is happening in your body, which is resulting in stress and anxiety.
How therapy can help
Positive therapy can help to eliminate the negativity which prevents motivation to make changes in lifestyle. Reducing negativity and stress improves your hormonal balance and mood. If you feel relaxed and happy, studies have shown that you are far less likely to be distressed by unfamiliar symptoms. If you can create a new mindset free of fear and negative thoughts, you will get a fresh, second chance in life, and improved sexuality.
