Sexuality changes but does not disappear
Nothing stays the same as we grow older. Research has shown that sexuality, an important part of that which makes the world go round, has specific changes at specific times. Research has shown sexuality, one of the most important things that help make the world go round, undergoes specific changes at specific times, for both men and women.
When you hit 40 you may wonder why your sexual desire is no longer the rushing tide that it used to be when you were in your twenties. You could be concerned that it may be a sign of a medical condition, or even worse – a mental crisis. However, some important results of studies have revealed the facts of how sexuality changes as you age.
What research has revealed about the age groups:
Men in the 20’s:
Testosterone, the male hormone men needed for sexual arousal, is at its highest during the twenties. If there is any sign of erectile dysfunction at that stage, it would be best to consult the doctor.
Women in the 20’s:
At this time women seem to at the most fertile time of their lives. This may make women be a little choosier who they have sex with, especially if they are afraid of falling pregnant. Libido may drop a little, but studies say that once this so-called danger period is over, libido should go back to normal.
Men in 30’s and early 40’s:
Testosterone is still high during these years, as is the sex drive of most men. After the age of 35, testosterone production begins to drop slightly, normally about 1 or 2 percent per year. But it is important to note that for some men it may be faster, possibly due to anxiety and stress, or family issues.
Women in 30’s and early 40’s:
For women, this period is when sex drive is at its strongest. Estrogen, the female sex hormone, is also in good supply, and most women in that age group tended to have more sex. Studies have shown that they were also likely to have sex earlier in a relationship than at other times.
Men late 40’s, 50’s and beyond:
If you are in good health, physically and mentally, there’s no reason why you should not continue to enjoy an active sex life as you grow older. Although your erections may happen less often and become less firm with time, it is not always age-related. If you feel you may have a measure of erectile dysfunction which is concerning, there may be a medical condition that needs investigating.
Women late 40’s, 50’s and beyond:
Studies have shown that some women show more interest in sex as there is less worry about falling pregnant, and there is more privacy because the children have probably grown and left the home nest. However, around 50 the Estrogen levels begin to drop, and libido starts to cool down – mainly due to the onset of menopause. But even the menopausal symptoms can be reduced if you enlist the help of your doctor. There are several things that can affect sex drive, no matter what age you are.
The key to a successful outcome of a problem that is concerning to you is to get medical advice as soon as you can.
