How are sexual problems in men diagnosed?

Evaluation of sexual dysfunction begins with a visit to a physician experienced in sexual health. If this is you, a detailed medical, sexual, and psychological history, will have to be provided.

This will be followed by a thorough physical examination. It may include blood tests. Your genitals may be examined for abnormalities such as lumps or swollen areas.

The physician may ask you some very personal questions, which may be a bit embarrassing. Some useful advice is to make sure you are on good terms with your doctor, so you can answer freely without being shy.

The doctor may ask questions about the frequency of sexual relations, the quality of the encounters, how much satisfaction you get out of them, and how many sexual partners you have – among other things.

The treatment plans depend almost entirely on an accurate diagnosis of the sexual problem. Should the cause be of psychological origin, you will get help from a therapist such as a psychologist, or possibly a hypnotherapist, who can embark on a course of cognitive behavioural therapy, known as CBT.

Performance anxiety

CBT is a type of psychotherapy. It has been shown to be effective for treating anxiety issues, including sexual performance anxiety, and non-medical erectile dysfunction.

CBT aims to change patterns of thinking and behaviors. It specially focuses on behaviours that are having a negative impact on a person’s life or well-being. The theory is that when a person is able to think in a more clear and rational way, they are able to respond better to challenging situations.

Low Libido

Low libido is defined as when sexual desire is diminished, or completely absent. It may also present itself to a person who is unable to get an erection, as a form of erectile dysfunction.

Low libido can also be the result of a medical, physical issue, or medication side effects. The doctor will be able to help resolve the problem.

The most common sexual problems in men

Most men equate successful sexual encounters with the strength of their manhood. When things do not go as planned, it is usually of great concern that something is dreadfully wrong.

The most common issues are a lack of sexual desire (low libido) and inability to get, or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction.)

Some factors which may contribute to these sexual issues:

  • Side effects from medications such antidepressants and blood pressure meds.
  • Alcoholism, which is depressant and leads to anxiety and more meds
  • Hypoactive sexual disorder
  • Relationship problems
  • Testosterone deficiency, also known as low testosterone, and other hormonal problems which may need to be identified
  • Prostate issues
  • Heavy smoking which narrow arteries which affect the blood flow to the genitals
  • If you identify with any of these factors, it does not mean the end of your sex life. Help is available.
