About Doxycycline

Doxycycline is a type of antibiotic which is often prescribed for severe cases of acne. In addition to being a powerful antibiotic, it also acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) similar to antidepressants. Acne medication is usually given to teenagers who have reached puberty and developed skin problems. While the meds help, they might carry over into the early 20s, before significant healing is attained. Unfortunately, these meds come with side effects, some of which may be quite severe.

Because both fall under the SSRI group of meds, here are some common side effects which may include:

• Anxiety and agitation
• Nausea and indigestion
• Diarrhoea/constipation
• Possible blurred vision and a dry mouth
• Fatigue

Both Doxycycline and Roaccutane (another popular acne medication) may include some of these side effects. However, only doxycycline has side effects which can affect sexuality.

Sexual issues affected by acne drug doxycycline

Note that not everyone is affected by sexual issues. It is mainly those who develop a condition known as Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction, who are affected.

Here are some of the more common symptoms:

• Reduced sexual desire
• Impotence
• Genital numbness
• Lower level of sexual pleasure

There have also been a number of reports that include cognitive difficulties, such as perception and reasoning

Causes of doxycycline sexual dysfunction

Intensive research has shown that the main cause may be some of the ingredients, such as serotonin, used in the manufacture of doxycycline. Specifically, serotonin is a chemical which carries messages from the nerve cells in the brain to all parts of the body, including functions like sexual functions. However, an increase in serotonin can affect other hormones such as testosterone, which affects arousal, and dopamine, which plays a role in achieving orgasm. Note that many different sexual categories are associated with SSRI’s, the most common of which is delayed ejaculation.

The best way to treat the effects of doxycycline

Besides the sexual side effects, doxycycline has other more common side effects which include those such as anxiety, dizziness, dry mouth, or blurred vision.

Here are some easy ways to ease some of the side effects:

• Take doxycycline with a full glass of water. Also drink plenty of fluids when taking this med.
• Most brands can also be taken with food or milk, should the meds upset your stomach.
• Stick to simple meals, not rich or spicy foods. If you have a snack, avoid dairy products.

Who can use doxycycline – and who should NOT?

This medication is usually prescribed for adults and children over the age of 12 years old.

Do not take if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding
• You suffer from kidney or liver problems

If you forget to take your dose, do not double up at your next dose. It is important not to take 2 doses at the same time. NEVER double up on a forgotten dose. Rather set a reminder to help you remember!
