What constitutes a healthy relationship?
Whether you are in a partnership, like marriage for example, or perhaps in a serious relationship, a healthy relationship is all about maintaining a meaningful emotional connection with each other. It is important that you recognise the difference between being loved and actually feeling loved. When you feel loved, it builds up your relationship and encourages you to respond positively, so that your partner also shares in feeling loved.
If you are seeing unhealthy signs developing in your relationship, it is advisable not to just brush them off. Communicate with your partner, and talk about what you are feeling – it may help to prevent your relationship from collapsing.
Advice to keep your relationship healthy
The following suggestions may help to keep your relationship in a good place:
- Spend quality time together and focus on the time you are spending with each other.
- Good communication is key to a healthy relationship. If you have certain feelings that may affect your relationship, speak to your partner and try to work it out together.
- Compromise – learn to give and take. A partner who wants to get 100% of everything all the time, is not doing the relationship any good. A compromise may not always be easy, but it can help to keep things on an even keel.
- Manage stress and anxiety. Mental upheaval often leads to bad tempers, and irritableness, which lead you to take things out on your partner. If you are finding it difficult to cope with stress, it could slowly poison your relationship. Consider getting some professional help to help you manage stress, and how to embrace a calmer state of mind.
- Keep physical intimacy alive. Good sexual relations are part of a strong foundation of a healthy relationship. It is also part of the human existence of a partnership. Note that sex is not the only method of physical intimacy. Just a touch, or a hug, is also a means of physical contact. Keep paying attention to the small things, and your relationship will stay strong.
There are other events which could arise to sabotage the health of a relationship. This can include severe health problems, different ideas about managing financial issues, and may even extend to ideas about raising children.
Coping with stress
Not everyone copes with stress in the same way. Some are inclined to allow it to build up until there is an outburst of frustration and anger, while others find relief in trying to talk things out in order to resolve the problem. Communicating with your partner is a positive way to go forward. Note that there will always be conflict in any relationship. The goal for each partner should not be winning at all costs. Studies have shown that to keep a relationship strong people like to know, whatever the outcome, that they have, at the very least – respectfully been heard and can move on.
