What is sex drive?
Sex drive, also known as libido, refers to a person’s desire to engage in sexual activity. A low libido indicates a decreased desire to have sex, while a high libido results in an increased desire for sexual relations. Everyone is different, and most people are accepting of sexual activity which is pertinent to their own particular needs.
The causes for the different levels of libido in individuals also vary, with some reasons being medical issues, psychologically related, or age-related. Highs and lows of sexual desire may fluctuate or come and go at various times. This is normal. But if you are concerned about anything, always consult a medical practitioner in case of an underlying medical condition being present.
Research from the Yale Medical School
Studies conducted have discovered that a person’s sex drive may be partly determined by inherited genes. Scientists have established that there is a certain gene which influences personality that may also affect a person’s sexual function, especially that of sex drive.
The same research has also shown that the mutated gene may be related to attention deficit disorder, which can alter the personality, making one more energetic and more prone to trying new things. According to the studies, these people were stronger in sexual attributes such as desire, arousal, and general sex functionality.
It was noted that the particular changes relating to sexual issues is a relatively new mutation of the gene, which was not previously identified.
High sex drive and low sex drive
If you do not have the specific gene which contributes to a high sex drive, do not despair! There are other factors which can increase your libido – if of course, you feel it is on the low side. You do not have to be born with this gene to ensure that you never have issues with low libido.
Further research has revealed yet another aspect of the gene. It has also been associated with altruistic behaviour which causes you to be self-denying and unselfish, enhancing your feeling of personal well-being. In a sexual relationship, this can result in you having genuine concern, and less frustration, with a partner who may not share your level of sexual desire.
Experts agree that most people usually have symptoms associated with only one variation of this specific gene.
Some factors which help to keep libido healthy:
Good lifestyle habits and a healthy diet are essential for general all-round good sexual functionality. Here are some foods which contribute to keeping sexual desire at a satisfactory level where it needs to be:
- Fruit, vegetables, grains, seeds and nuts, all contain plant chemical compounds which help to keep the blood flow healthy to all parts of the body, including the genital areas where it is necessary for healthy sex and libido.
- Avocados are especially high in B vitamins which help the production of sex hormones, the key to a strong sex drive.
- Olive oil keeps the heart healthy and promotes optimal blood flow.
Studies maintain that obesity, smoking, too much alcohol, lack of exercise, poor sleep habits and a bad diet – will not support your quest for a good sex drive. In fact, whether or not you have been born with the rogue gene, your efforts for a healthy sex life may be sabotaged.
