What is sexuality?

Sexuality is not about who you have sex with, or how often you have sex. Sexuality is all about your personal sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions, and behaviours towards other people. You may find some people physically or sexually attractive, while others may appeal to you only on an emotional basis. All these things are a part of your sexuality.

There are many diverse types of sexuality, and sometimes it can take a while to figure out which type suits you best. Studies have shown that whatever type you have – coming to terms with your sexuality, can be a very exciting and positive experience. Sexuality is an important part who you really are. Not everyone is the same, and if your sexuality is a little different from others, someone people may decide to give you a hard time about it.

Experts agree that there is no real right or wrong, but if you are concerned about anything you feel, make a plan to talk to a professional counsellor about it.

Some types of sexuality

In bygone days, sex was a subject very seldom spoken about in families, and definitely not in public or genteel society. The only kind which was readily accepted was that of sex between a man and a woman, known as heterosexual. Many people knew about homosexuality, but it was frowned upon, and mostly conducted in secret.

However, with the passing of time, understanding, tolerance, and acceptance of different sexual orientations has grown rapidly.

Here are some more common types of sexuality:

  • Heterosexuality, which refers to men who are attracted to women, and women who are attracted to men, is by far the most common kind of sexuality. Also known as straight.
  • People who are attracted to the same sex are identified as homosexual, or in later times as gay. These kinds of relationships consist of men who are attracted to men, and women who are attracted to women.
  • People attracted in a sexual way to both men and women, are known as bisexual. This type of sexuality can be more complicated than being either so-called straight or gay. However, there are different kinds of bisexuality, and some people may have sexual feelings towards both genders, but only have intercourse with one sex.
  • Someone who identifies as asexual is a person who does not experience sexual attraction of any kind. Asexuality is not a choice. It is a recognized sexual orientation like heterosexuality or homosexuality. It is not the same as abstaining (abstinence) from having sex, but rather a total lack of desire for sexual feelings. Research has indicated that there are many people who strongly identify as being asexual.

No matter what sexuality type you identify with if you are bullied or discriminated against because of your sexual orientation, get support if you are finding it hard to cope. It is against the law in many countries to discriminate against someone because of sexual identification. Equality and freedom from prejudice are basic human rights that belong to all people.
