About sperm cells

Sperm cells are male reproductive cells, known as gametes, that originate in the testicles. Once they are ejaculated, their main claim to fame is to swim and fertilise the female egg also called a gamete. This means that a gamete is actually half of a whole, and once the egg is fertilised, the gamete becomes whole – and results in a human embryo.

Although on average, a male produces approximately 73 million sperm cells per 1 millilitre of ejaculation, and it takes only 1 sperm cell to fertilise the egg. However, if the mobility of the sperm is compromised, i.e. not able to move or swim very well, fertility may be affected. Note that sperm can live in the vagina for up to 5 days.

In spite of some ideas to the contrary, the testicle size has nothing to do with how many sperm cells a male produces every day.

The nature of semen

What is semen? Semen is a substance created by the male reproductive organs. It is a fluid made mostly of water and plasma and contains small amounts of essential nutrients such as calcium, potassium, and zinc. Other nutrients in semen include glucose, fructose, potassium, magnesium, and protein.

The nutrients found in semen are absorbed by the sperm, which keeps them alive and provide energy while they swim around to reach the egg. Studies have shown that the main energy source in the nutrients drawn from semen by sperm, is fructose – a kind of sugar. Semen obtains its nutrients when it is created by the male reproduction organs, which draw them from the body. It stands to reason then, that the more you ejaculate, the more nutrients you lose.

If you want healthy sperm and healthy semen, the key is to follow a healthy lifestyle and to embrace good eating habits high in vitamins and protein – especially if you are trying for a baby
