Kisspeptin is an important hormone that initiates the release of several other hormones. Also known as metastin, studies have shown that it has a secondary function of an ability to prevent the spread of cancer in the body. Kisspeptin is made in the hypothalamus section of the brain and signals the release of the luteinizing hormone, which plays a role in the production of estrogen for the ovaries, and testosterone for the testes.

Kisspeptin is therefore the beginning of a chain reaction that benefits the reproduction system, without which the reproduction process may go out of sync. The hormone is also strongly recommended for delayed puberty issues, and infertility in females,

Delayed puberty is classified as such when children, both male and female, develop puberty-related characteristics much later than their peers. Female and male infertility factors are lately showing high results of hormonal imbalances, with more issues related to females than males.

Potential problems with kisspeptin levels

Although more research is needed, studies have indicated that high kisspeptin levels in childhood, may lead to early puberty. Studies have also shown that some women have high levels of kisspeptin during pregnancy. Preliminary research has suggested that this may be a sign that some women may be at a higher risk of a miscarriage than others. However, experts agree that further studies are needed. There are no other symptoms or conditions related to high levels of kisspeptin.

But it has been noted that low levels of kisspeptin can cause problems such as infertility, by preventing menstruation and ovulation in some women. This may be a problem for women who desperately need to ovulate for artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization using the women’s eggs. To overcome this, the gynaecologist may suggest an injection of kisspeptin to trigger ovulation and allow for artificial insemination.

Insufficient kisspeptin may result in lower levels of testosterone being produced by the testes, and in addition to fertility issues, may also cause weak erections which can affect sexual encounters.

If you are struggling with fertility, have you taken into consideration that one of the issues might be a low level of kisspeptin? Visit the doctor for a hormonal test to establish your kisspeptin levels.

Emotions and fertility

A balanced hormonal system with everything at the right level should make getting pregnant be a breeze. However, things may be a bit of an emotional roller-coaster. This can put a damper on things if you are constantly worried about fertility, and beginning to develop anxiety when you do not conceive.

Follow a healthy diet high in nutrition and healthy fats such as nuts, avocado, cheese, eggs, and fatty fish. Good nutrition will improve your fertility chances, and help to keep kisspeptin levels where they should be. A diet with plenty of green veggies and fruit helps to ease anxiety and lift depression.
