What is taboo?
A taboo is an activity or behavior that is forbidden, prohibited, or otherwise outside of what is considered acceptable in society. Taboos are usually grounded in morality, and can also be linked to a culture or religion. For example, there are cultures which prohibits marriage or sexual relations between members of the family with close blood ties.
In bygone historical times, especially in royal families, marriage between first cousins, and other close family members, was met with approval. This was in spite of the fact of rogue genes, and other deformities or weaknesses, making appearances. In fact, there are still signs of bygone incestuous family relationships, that may pop up in the form of a rogue gene, resulting in what is commonly known as the “black sheep of the family.”
Forbidden love and taboo
In this day and age, any relationship that is disapproved of by society falls under the umbrella of forbidden love.
Here are some examples:
- Student/teacher relationships.
- A relationship between a boss and employee.
- Some inter-racial, inter-caste, and inter-religion relationships.
- Although not under as much condemnation as in the past – same sex love or marriages.
- A vast difference in ages of couples involved with each other.
These are just some of the issues society at large may frown upon, some may be personal feelings, while others might be cultural and religious ideology.
What about cheating?
Cheating is definitely taboo. It is not actually a belief or a culture, but rather a decision someone consciously makes to cheat in a relationship or marriage. It is not only the cheating which is taboo, but also the subterfuge and lying that goes with it to make cheating happen – always in secret of course. Being cheated on in a relationship can be damaging to your mental health, as it breaks the trust you had, and also takes a toll on your confidence and self-esteem. It does not matter how long you have been together. The emotional pain will be the same after only one year of dating, or 10 years in a relationship. In the midst of the pain you may have wondered whether the cheater will ever get karma for the hurt you have been exposed to. Do cheaters ever get karma? The short answer is yes! But it is not in your hands to mete out punishment to someone who cheated on you, and committed the ultimate taboo act.
What is karma?
Simply put, karma is the idea that what goes around comes around. Studies have revealed that ancient Hindu writings first made known that karma (which is life) comes to everyone. The theory is that you will sow what you reap – so yes – cheaters will also get karma. Experts agree that if you have been lied to, manipulated, and deceived, the best thing you can do is to pick up the pieces and move on with your life. Bear in mind that cheaters are often filled with guilt, and depression – having a hard time justifying their hurtful taboo actions. This could be karma, in its simplest form, a result of a cheater’s own actions, and can resonate for a lifetime.
