Do you have diabetes?
Research results from the US indicate that almost a third of people who have diabetes do not know that they have it. You could be one of those who already have diabetes, or you could be pre-diabetic — a condition that raises your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Your pancreas produces insulin, which controls the level of blood sugar in your body. In type 2 diabetes, your cells become resistant to insulin, which leaves much of the sugar unable to be absorbed by the cells and builds up in your bloodstream. This impacts the pancreas and over-works the kidneys, which then deposit large amounts of sugar-filled liquid into the bladder, leading to frequent urination. It's almost like being dehydrated — you're constantly thirsty, seemingly unable to get enough to drink. If you're always thirsty for no apparent reason, check the list below for more signs of high blood sugar.
- High blood pressure. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a significant warning sign for pre-diabetes and possible insulin resistance. High BP has no symptoms, so unless you have it tested, you won't know you have it. Having high BP doesn't necessarily mean you have diabetes, but it's a good sign that you could be pre-diabetic, with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. When you go for a BP test, ask the doctor to check your sugar as well.
- Fatigue. If you're often tired for no reason, it might be a sign that your muscle cells are resisting insulin — they aren't getting the glucose they need from your blood supply, so you tire quickly.
- Vision problems. Another red flag is sudden blurry vision and difficulty focusing. When blood sugar levels are too high, fluid is sometimes pulled from the lenses in the eyes, leaving you with cloudy vision and an inability to focus. This comes and goes as your blood sugar rises too high or drops too low.
- Infections. When your sugar levels are too high and not effectively controlled, your body becomes more vulnerable to various types of infection. Common areas for these infections include the bladder, kidneys, gums, and feet. Even a small cut or scrape that won't heal can lead to a serious infection when your body's ability to fight infection is compromised.
Diabetes complications
Complications from diabetes are a prospect that can have a devastating effect on your health. Diabetes is a serious illness, and if not well-managed, you run the risk of developing complications such as coronary heart disease, stroke, poor circulation, kidney disease, and eye disease. Another complication is that type 2 diabetes can negatively impact sexual health in men and women, including physical and psychological effects that cause anxiety. Men may struggle with erectile dysfunction and reduced arousal, and women may struggle with vaginal dryness and low libido.
When your blood sugar is close to normal levels, you'll have more energy to cope with everyday tasks, be less prone to infections, and be more resistant to colds and flu. Tiredness and fatigue will be a thing of the past, as your zest for life is restored. Visit the doctor if you have warning signs that your sugar is too high. Follow the doctor's instructions, control your sugar levels to restore feelings of well-being, and stay well.
