What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is inflammation or infection of the liver. The liver is a vital body organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood, and fights infections. When the liver is inflamed or damaged, its optimal function may be severely compromised. Some common causes are alcohol abuse, heavy smoking and toxins from an unhealthy diet. Side effects from some medications and certain medical conditions can all play a part in hepatitis issues.
About hepatitis B
There are several types of hepatitis – A, B, C, D, and even E. However, Hepatitis B can be easily spread by sexual activity, and is very prolific. Unvaccinated people who have multiple sex partners, especially sex without protection, are at a high risk of transmission from someone who may have an undiagnosed hepatitis B infection. Studies in the US have shown that among people seeking treatment for a sexually transmitted disease (STD), 20% to 40% may test positive for hepatitis B infection. Unfortunately, hepatitis B and STDs often have the same symptoms, which can lead to confusion in the patient.
Adults who are sexually active should be vaccinated against hepatitis B, especially if one is not using protection during sex. The behaviours include:
- People who have had more than one sexual partner during the previous 6 months.
- A person who is seeking treatment for a sexually transmitted disease.
- Men who also have sex with men, as well as women.
Basically, it means that if you are sexually active, accept medical advice to be vaccinated against the condition. Hepatitis B can range from a mild infection with few or no symptoms, which your body may be able to combat, to a serious chronic infection that could require a stint in the hospital to overcome the virus.
The dangers of a chronic condition
Because hepatitis causes inflammation in the liver, it weakens the liver’s ability to operate properly. Over time, if the infection remains chronic, it can result in serious health problems such as:
- A lifelong infection with the virus.
- A compromised immune system which can raise the risk of other infections like colds and flu.
- Complete liver failure from liver damage.
- A very high risk of getting liver cancer.
Any of these health conditions have the potential to negatively affect your daily life, your relationships, your family life, your job, your ability to take part in sports, and also your sexuality.
Some common symptoms
Mild cases of hepatitis B do not always manifest in symptoms. However, there are some common symptoms attributed to hepatitis in general, which may occur such as:
- Abdominal pain.
- Dark coloured urine.
- Loss of appetite.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Fatigue.
- Yellowing of skin and the whites of eyes.
If you have any of these symptoms, visit the doctor for tests.
