What are fungal infections?
Fungal infections, also known as mycosis, are diseases caused by a fungus such as yeast or mould and are most common on your skin or nails. However, fungi (plural) can also cause infections in the mouth, throat, urinary tract, genitals and other parts of the body, including athlete’s foot and thrush. Some fungal infections are very contagious, and spread easily from one person to another, especially during sexual encounters.
Not all types of fungi cause infections, but people who have a weak immune system, have a risk of picking up a sickness.
Tinea cruris, also known as Jock Itch
This type of infection thrives in warm and humid places, like the genital areas. It also affects the skin of the buttocks and inner thighs, as well as the perineal skin. This is a layer of skin inside the body between the genitals, separating the vaginal opening, or scrotum and anus. This infection mostly affects men and boys, but women and girls are also prone to develop the condition.
The symptoms of Jock Itch include:
- Itching and burning in the affected areas.
- A red scaly rash with raised edges, similar to ringworm.
- Flaking and peeling skin.
- Painful intercourse for both men and women.
This condition must be treated, or it may last several weeks or months.
Some common causes of tinea cruris:
- Both men and women who are prone to wearing tight clothes are at a high risk. Tight clothes can irritate the skin, and cause excessive sweating in the groin area.
- After a sports meeting, sweaty clothes should be taken off as soon as possible.
- Sharing damp towels can lead to picking up the fungus, as the condition is extremely contagious.
- Keeping on a damp swimming for a long time.
- Being in close contact with someone who has jock itch.
- Unprotected sex with someone who may have tinea cruris.
If you do not have a strong immune system or have HIV, you could be at a higher risk than others.
Some actions you can take to prevent a jock itch infection:
- Prevention starts with good hygiene habits.
- Bath or shower every day, but especially after sports or exercise. Pat your groin area dry with a clean towel, and consider using an anti-fungal powder for extra protection.
- Never share your towel or personal items with anyone else. Remember that you cannot see who might have a fungal infection, so stay safe.
- Wash your sports clothes after each use. Put sports shoes in the sun to dry thoroughly.
- Try to wear clothes and underwear that are not excessively tight-fitting.
If have an athlete’s foot infection, use a separate towel to dry your feet and put immediately in the wash.
Diagnosis
The condition is relatively simple to diagnose. The doctor will be able to diagnose Tinea cruris by looking at the rash and noting the symptoms. Using a good anti-fungal cream could be the first line of treatment.
The doctor will also recommend that there be no sexual encounters until the condition has cleared up.
