What exactly are energy drinks?

An energy drink is a kind of specific drink which contains a combination of various compounds, including caffeine, and is marketed as providing mental and physical stimulation. Energy drinks also usually contain sugar, artificial sweeteners, and certain herbal extracts. Energy drinks have often been confused with sports beverages, which are entirely different products. Sports beverages are drinks, also known as electrolytes, whose purpose is to help athletes replace water, energy, and especially depleted electrolytes, before and after training, or competition. 

Energy drinks consist mainly of water, up to 41 grams of sugar, which is a few grams more than the average soda, and approximately 120mg of caffeine. Studies have shown that some energy drinks may contain up to 500mg of caffeine, which is dangerously high. In addition, some herbal ingredients which are associated with mental alertness such as ginseng root extract, may also be included.

How energy drinks can affect your health

The idea of a drink that offers a quick boost of energy may appeal to people who are fatigued or feeling tired and who believe that caffeine can give them an edge in concentration. However, some concerns should not be ignored.

  • Too much caffeine can cause adverse cardiovascular effects like increased and irregular heart rate.
  • If you take several energy drinks in one day, the excess caffeine may lead to anxiety, and raised blood pressure.
  • The high sugar content can raise the risk of diabetes, and lead to weight gain.
  • Studies have shown that people who abuse energy drinks often have very poor dental health.
  • The boost from an energy drink does not last all that long, which may result in caffeine withdrawal symptoms, like a headache or a fuzzy mind. 

Due to the amount of sugar and stimulating ingredients present in energy drinks, there is agreement among some researchers that they may not always be helpful or healthy.
