Can you get covid 19 from sexual activity?
According to covid protocols, close contact with an infected person is considered to be about 2 metres apart, which will put you at risk of the virus – whether you are engaged in sexual activity or not.
The virus spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can be inhaled via the nose or mouth of someone nearby. Hence the constant reminders to keep your distance and wear your mask. Coming into contact with someone who is positive, could also spread droplets onto their personal belongings putting you at risk if you touch the items.
If you are taking part in sexual activities, even kissing or cuddling, or touching the mouth or nose of someone who may be infected. As far as the actual sexual act is concerned, there is currently no evidence that the covid virus is transmitted through vaginal fluids or semen.
However, according to studies, the virus has been detected in the semen of people who have had, or who are recovering from covid 19.
How to protect yourself if you are sexually active
If you are unvaccinated and are sexually active with someone who does not live with you, here are some precautions you can put in place to reduce your risk:
- Avoid sex partners who have any symptoms of covid.
- Avoid kissing or fondling.
- If you engage in sexual activity, make sure you both wear a mask.
- To be safe, wash your hands and shower before and after sexual activity.
- Use soap and water to clean the area where you have sexual activity.
Always use a condom whenever you have sex, especially at this time, whether you have had the vaccination or not.
Covid and high blood pressure
Research has found that people with untreated or uncontrolled high blood pressure may be at risk of being severely ill if infected with covid 19. If you have high blood pressure, it is important to take your meds and keep in touch with your doctor should you begin to feel ill. Protecting yourself against serious health issues related to high blood pressure, with covid 19 all around us, is very important at this time.
In addition to taking your meds, here are some tips to help naturally control your blood pressure.
- Choose heart-healthy foods such as whole grains, chicken, fish, and low-fat dairy
- Quit smoking
- Decrease salt and eat fewer takeaways and processed foods
- Exercise on a regular basis, and get help to manage stress
If your blood pressure is under control, don’t change anything before talking to the doctor first.
Sex workers and covid
Sex workers have only one way to earn money, and if they are driven underground by the lockdown, thousands of sex workers have no other income. The alternative is to keep working no matter what, to support their families. Some may be forced to take clients that they are not comfortable with, putting their lives at risk – just in order to survive. Covid has a wide sweep, affecting everyone along the way, wreaking havoc in lives, needs and businesses.
