About doxycycline
Doxycycline is a type of antibiotic often prescribed for severe cases of acne. In addition to being a powerful antibiotic, it also carries side effects similar to those of antidepressants. Acne medication is usually given to teenagers who have reached puberty and developed skin problems. While the meds do help, treatment might carry over into the early 20s before significant healing is attained. However, many of these medications do come with side effects, which can include:
- Nausea, indigestion.
- Diarrhoea, constipation.
- Possible blurred vision and a dry mouth.
- Fatigue.
- Reduced sexual desire.
Another commonly prescribed acne medication is roaccutane (isotretinoin), which can carry its own set of side effects.
It is not only adolescents who use doxycycline — acne and other skin conditions can strike at any age, and cause a lot of distress, needing medical attention. Popular acne medications generally come with side effects, but studies and research have shown that doxycycline is one of the more commonly reported to affect sexuality. Common symptoms include:
- Low libido.
- Erectile dysfunction.
- Genital numbness.
- Lower level of sexual pleasure.
- A degree of impotence.
There have also been reports of cognitive difficulties, such as with perception and reasoning.
Easing the side effects of doxycycline
Besides the sexual side effects, doxycycline has other more common side effects, which include anxiety, dizziness, dry mouth, or blurred vision. Here are some easy ways to ease some of these side effects:
- Take doxycycline with a full glass of water. Also drink plenty of fluids when taking this medication.
- Most brands can also be taken with food or milk, should the medication upset your stomach.
- Stick to simple meals, not rich or spicy foods. If you have a snack, avoid dairy products.
Visit the doctor for advice if you are concerned about any side effects that do not go away.
Who can and cannot take doxycycline?
This medication is usually prescribed for adults, and children over the age of 12.
It is not recommended during pregnancy, or if you have kidney or liver problems. If you forget to take your dose, do not double up at your next dose. It is important not to take two doses at the same time.
Never double up on a forgotten dose. Rather set a reminder to help you remember!
Doxycycline is a strong antibiotic needed to treat serious skin infections. Always take it under the care and advice of a medical practitioner.
