What is inhibited sexual desire?

Inhibited desire refers to a decrease in the desire or a lack of interest in sexual activity. It is closely associated with a loss of libido, and can result from physical or psychological issues. It has been associated with low levels of the male hormone testosterone, and also psychological problems such as anxiety and depression.

Medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and the side effects of some antidepressants, also play a role.

How are male sexual problems diagnosed?

It is no easy task to establish just what the sexual problem may be, but a doctor will ask for a thorough history of the symptoms, and order tests to rule out any medical problems which might be contributing to the dysfunction.

Tests can include:

  • Blood tests to evaluate hormone levels, as well as check for diabetes, and cholesterol levels.
  • Vascular systems and good blood flow to the penis should also be assessed for any malfunction. A good flow to the genital area and in particular is needed for getting and maintaining an erection.
  • Tests may also be conducted with regard to nerve damage caused by possible diabetes.
  • In the case of underlying psychological problems, the doctor may recommend some counselling sessions to deal with stress and anxiety.

How is inhibited sexual desire treated?

Many cases of this particular sexual dysfunction have been successfully treated, once the root causes had been identified.

Here are some treatment strategies:

  • If a problem such as low testosterone is diagnosed, hormonal therapy will be advised to get levels up to where they need to be.
  • Some medications to treat blood pressure and stress also have side effects which lower libido. If you are taking any of these meds on a regular basis, ask your doctor if it is possible to lower the dosage, or try something with a different formulary which does not have those particular side effects. Under no circumstances must you give up any prescribed medications, unless it is under the guidance of a doctor.
  • If you have a circulatory problem which is affecting blood flow to various parts of the body, this will always include the genital area. To get and maintain an erection will be very difficult if this area is starved of a good blood supply.
  • To counter a blood flow problem you may have to make some lifestyle changes like giving up smoking, lowering cholesterol by following a healthy diet, taking in less alcohol, and getting more exercise.

Relationship problems, as well as stress and anxiety regarding your lack of sexual desire, would benefit from the attentions of a knowledgeable, professional counsellor.

Can sexual problems be cured?

The answer is yes – sexual problems can be successfully treated, depending on the underlying cause. There is every chance of a cure if a physical condition is related to treatable or reversible circumstances.

Your doctor will be able to give you the best advice in that regard.

Sexual dysfunction which has come about because of fear, stress and anxiety, can be effectively treated by counselling, and many experts have recommended hypnotherapy to deal with past bad sexual experiences – including the very real performance anxiety syndrome.
