Are you struggling to conceive?

There is a school of thought among the medical fraternity which maintains that if you have not fallen pregnant after one year of intercourse without contraception, you more than likely have fertility problems that need to be investigated. Worldwide, the problem of infertility is much greater than many people realize. In Australia, for example, research has shown that about 1 in 6 couples have fertility issues, and this ratio could be higher in more populated countries like the US and the UK.  In addition to the usual fertility difficulties such as low sperm count, and irregular ovulation, studies have also revealed that there might be underlying inflammation which could lead to uterus abnormalities. This includes conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (small cysts on the ovaries) which is aggravated by inflammation, and can affect ovulation.

What causes the inflammation?

Research has shown that there is a strong connection between gastro-intestinal health, inflammation, and fertility. An unhealthy gut can affect many parts of the body, and cause problems such as chronic ear infections, fatigue, joint pain, headaches and more. Vaginal infection is another symptom of bad gut health, and may cause severe inflammation which impacts on fertility. Here are some gut problems that can affect fertility:

  • If your gut is not working properly, your food will not be digested properly, nor will all the nutrients be absorbed. This can negatively affect body functions like the immune system, and also the reproductive system.
  • An under-performing immune system can lead to chronic inflammation in and around the gut area, leading to the nutrients needed for healthy sex hormones not being properly absorbed. This may result in a hormonal imbalance which compromises the quality of the egg production, as well as the quality of the sperm production, affecting its ability to get to the egg.
  • The digestive system is designed to eliminate waste fairly quickly. If your gut is sluggish, waste is held in the colon, sometimes long enough to become toxic. This can make you prone to vaginal and other infections, which leads to serious inflammation issues.

The key to maintaining a healthy gut is to follow a healthy diet rich in leafy green veggies and plenty of fruit.

Hidden food allergies

Food allergies are a major source of inflammation in the body, which can cause damage to the fallopian tubes and prevent ovulation. If you have symptoms such as bloating, pain, irritable bowel, constipation, or chronic fatigue, that come and go for no obvious reason – you may have some hidden food allergies. One of the most common food allergies is an intolerance to gluten which is found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye. This allergy causes inflammation in the small intestine, preventing the nutrients needed for reproduction from being properly absorbed.

New research

Some researchers have now recommended that women who suffer from unexplained, constant infertility, be tested for gluten intolerance. Should you test positive, a strict gluten-free diet usually dispels the symptoms, including any unexplained infertility issues. Studies have shown that a gluten allergy may also contribute to chronic vaginitis, an inflammatory condition which throws the production levels of estrogen and progesterone out of balance. This condition would make the chances of falling pregnant practically nil.
