Testosterone may improve brain function
When we think about testosterone, our thoughts usually run in the direction of male hormones, and the necessity of testosterone for good sexual function.
Unfortunately, very little thought is given to how testosterone can affect mental functions. Research has shown that testosterone plays a part in behaviours such as aggression, dominance, confidence, and self-esteem. Studies have revealed that low testosterone (low-T) can result in a lack of self-esteem, self-confidence, feelings of melancholy, and anxiety.
Further studies have revealed that low-T can lower the ability to concentrate, lead to sleep problems, as well as a lack of energy and motivation do things. Cognitive functions which include memory, reasoning, and attention span, may also be impaired by low-T. Body functions do change with age, and this includes a decline in testosterone levels, which studies have shown influence moods and emotions.
What are the symptoms which are related to brain health and low testosterone?
Fatigue and mental fogginess are some of the most common emotional symptoms, but there are other signs which may indicate that you may have low-T levels.
- Unexplained sadness or depression.
- A sudden lack of self-confidence.
- Irritability and difficulty with concentration.
- No energy and poor sleep patterns.
- Decreased sex drive, and a measure of erectile dysfunction.
If you suspect that your testosterone may be low, a simple blood test will establish whether or not you have low-T issues.
What are the causes of low-T problems?
The most common cause of low testosterone levels is a hormonal imbalance which means that the body is not producing enough testosterone for one or another reason. This may be age related, although it can affect someone of any age. Fortunately, if there is no underlying medical reason, this can be put right with hormonal treatment.
Here are some medical reasons which could affect the body’s production of testosterone.
- Obesity can affect hormone production and sexuality.
- Antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications. This may be seen as a two-pronged attack, as uncontrolled anxiety has a negative effect on testosterone – and so do the meds used to control the depression and anxiety.
- Injury to the testicles.
- Infection in the groin area, which affects the testicles.
- Active stage of HIV/Aids.
- Chronic liver or kidney disease.
- Type 2 diabetes.
If you have any of the above symptoms, no matter what age you may be, you could be suffering from low-T levels, which puts you at risk of endangering brain health. A visit to the doctor will be able to establish exactly which issues may be present.
What kind of treatment is available for low-T issues?
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, and whether or not there is an underlying medical condition, the go-to remedy is usually hormonal treatment.
However, some lifestyle changes such as losing weight, giving up smoking – if applicable, taking in less alcohol, and getting some exercise, will put you on the right path. Following a healthy diet is also a step in the right direction, and there are certain foods which help support body hormonal functions.
Here are some examples of some of the foods which may promote the production of testosterone:
- Tuna is high in vitamin D which is linked to mental health, longer life, and testosterone production.
- Low-fat milk fortified with vitamin D is also excellent. Low-fat milk has all the nutrients of whole milk, without all the saturated fat which can add to cholesterol and is also bad for testosterone.
- Oysters are rich in zinc which also supports testosterone production.
- Beans are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to all parts of the body, including the hormonal and reproduction systems.
A proper level of testosterone will help to keep your mind clear, regulate your moods, and improve memory as well as concentration issues.
And it goes without saying that bringing testosterone levels to normal, will also help to overcome any problems with sexual desire or erectile dysfunction.
