How and why you age

Slowing down the ageing process is not the same as extending your life! Ageing is the process by which you gradually weaken and lose functionality. We often age much quicker than we need to, and studies have shown that by taking anti-ageing steps, the ageing process can be slowed down and even delayed, and so preserve youthful abilities, and characteristics.

Studies have revealed that most of the cells in your body have the ability to reproduce, but as you grow older, these cells do not regenerate to the same quality as before. As time goes by, more and more cells eventually die, and your system is left with a somewhat weakened immune system. However, research has also shown that there are measures you can take to slow down the ageing process.

What causes the cells to die?

Your cells are chiefly made up of chromosomes and are equipped with caps at the ends that keep them from unravelling. These caps are called telomeres and each time the cells reproduce the telomeres get shorter, and the shorter they get, the less protection they give to the chromosomes. As a result, you feel older, you look older and become susceptible to age-related issues. By keeping your telomeres from getting shorter you will be healthier as you get older, because your cells act younger enabling you to keep on doing the things you like, no matter what your biological age. Fortunately, there are natural ways to maintain your telomere length.

What you can do to stay youthful and vigorous, no matter your age

Extensive research has shown that in addition to eating nutrient-rich food sources, a healthy lifestyle, and specific vitamin supplements can increase the lifespan of cells by maintaining telomere length.

Here are some measures you can employ to combat the negative issues of ageing:

  • Make regular exercise an important part of your daily routine. It keeps the blood flowing to where it needs to go, including the genital areas which promote sexuality.
  • Follow a healthy diet. Opt for vegetables, fruit, whole-grain items, high-fibre foods, and good sources of protein, such as lean meat, fish, eggs and cheese.
  • If you are a smoker, make a plan to quit. The toxins in tobacco contribute to the hardening of the arteries, which increases the heart rate and leads to high blood pressure. These issues add to premature ageing and may result in sexual dysfunction problems, because of poor blood flow.
  • Stress which is badly handled and unmanaged can make you old before your time.
  • Minerals such as calcium and vitamin D help maintain telomere length and help the cells to regenerate fully.

Research has also indicated that vitamins such as C, E, and B12, also help to prevent the shortening of telomeres. This extensive research has shown that these vitamins are extremely effective when it comes to increasing telomere length. This is not a fountain of youth, but it does help to keep the ageing process where it belongs – in the slow lane.
