Are you just not interested in sex? You may be asexual

What is asexual?

Asexual is when there you have no sexual attraction, including any lustful thoughts, for other people. Most asexual folk have no sex drive, and it is also characterised by a total aversion to the actual sex act.

Studies have indicated that there are many people with this condition, and noted that more women than men appear to be asexual. In the past, asexuality has been diagnosed as being a sexual disorder. However, after much research, there is now an agreement by health professionals that allows self-identified asexual people to avoid being diagnosed as having a sexual disorder. In some cases it is sometimes seen as a psychological disorder, which may respond to therapy treatment.

Not always easy to diagnose

A chronic lack of sexual desire, could be mistaken for asexuality, but may actually be due to underlying medical reasons, which can be successfully treated. For example, a hormonal imbalance such as low levels of testosterone and estrogen, would be likely to decrease libido, and even nullify any sexual attraction to other people.

Other conditions such as stress and anxiety, certain medications to treat depression, some illnesses like cancer or diabetes, and even a poor diet, can have a major negative impact on sexuality.

Some signs of asexuality

  • You never think about sex, are not turned on by sexual thoughts, and have never felt any type of sexual attraction towards anyone.
  • Although you may enjoy physical affection like cuddling and hugging, you are totally put off by the idea of the sex act.
  • You may have tried sex and realised that it is not for you, while others know they are asexual without even having sex.
  • You may want to develop a close, romantic relationship with someone, without a sexual relationship, but realise that most potential partners would not accept it.
  • If you have never experienced sex, or a sexual attraction for anyone, it may be the key to whether or not you are asexual. You could have a lack of feelings towards anything of a sexual nature, and this may be an important pointer.

If you are unsure in any way about your sexuality, the best bet would be to check with your doctor for any underlying medical reasons, which may always be treatable.

More studies are needed about asexuality

A lot more research is needed to help asexual folk understand themselves better. Numerous studies have given sex educators a glimpse of how asexual people view themselves in a society which seems to revolve around all things sexual. They often feel like a square peg in a round hole, just not fitting in.

For instance, sex can engender all kinds of emotions, both good and bad. Sex is a source of passion, enjoyment, and pleasure for many. However it is not always understood, and most people respond very differently to sexuality.

Asexual people need to accept that passion, excitement, and pleasure are not only as a result of sex, but just a part of a wide range of human emotions.

Asexual folk are not less than others, and are able to feel any of these emotions, even if they have no interest in sex. Coaching by a therapist may help you to accept yourself just as you are.
