About libido

Recent research has shown that many people these days are having less sex than in the past. There appear to be various reasons for this, including the lockdowns during the present covid pandemic. However, the studies revealed that the main reason for less sex appears to be problems with libido. Libido is best defined as a description of your sexuality and the strength of your sexual desire.

Loss of libido is a common problem that affects many women and men at some point in their lives. It is often linked to issues such as relationship problems, anxiety, or perhaps a sign of an underlying medical problem. Although everyone’s libido level is different, if you are distressed about your lack of desire, or it is affecting your relationship, visit the doctor to make sure there are no underlying issues that are making you feel the way that you do. As far as libido goes, experts agree that libido is a little more complicated than it seems.

More about libido

Further studies also showed that for those battling with libido, there are only three categories i.e. no libido, low libido, and discrepant libido. Each is specific and each has its own set of symptoms for being what it is.

Here are the 3 categories: no libido, low libido, and discrepant libido. All of these contribute to the fact that people are having less sex than in the past. No libido and low libido share mostly the same symptoms – here are some of them:

  • Low testosterone in men and decreasing estrogen in women.
  • Side effects from blood pressure and antidepressant medications.
  • Actual depression is very different from just feeling unhappy, miserable and sad for a short while. It is a serious illness that can include feelings of sadness that do not go away, as well as losing interest in things that you used to enjoy.
  • Depression also causes a lack of sexual desire, which leads to less sex – or very often no sex at all.

All of these symptoms can be relieved or eased by medical intervention, or with the help of an experienced therapist.

What about discrepant libido?

Also known as desire discrepancy, this is a big deal for couples. It has been estimated that approximately 80% of couples experience discrepant libido, which leads to many people putting sex on the back burner. In essence, what it means is that one partner wants to have sex, but the other doesn’t. Although some therapists might feel that low libido is the most common sexual problem, in reality, desire discrepancy is more distressing as it can kill the romance in a relationship, especially if there is a high rate of desire discrepancy.

Unfortunately, some partners do not view discrepancy as a big problem and seem to be unaware of the damage it can do to a relationship. If you are in a relationship and feel that you are not getting the sex you believe you should be getting, the best way to help solve the issue is to be frank and open, and discuss it with your partner.

Try not to make accusations, but if you are both prepared to compromise, things may really improve, especially if you are in a relationship that is important to both of you.
