What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation, (PE) occurs when a man does not have sufficient control over ejaculation, and as a result he and his partner are not sexually satisfied. PE can occur, with very little stimulation, either before or just after sexual penetration.

The problem is more common than most people think, and has probably affected most men at some point in their lives. Premature ejaculation can cause distress, anxiety, and other psychological problems such as low self-esteem.

It is possible that PE may go hand in hand with erectile dysfunction, but definitely not always. Erectile dysfunction can happen to men of any age, whereas in younger men, the problem is usually premature ejaculation, and not always erectile dysfunction.

The main symptom of PE is undoubtedly an inability to control ejaculation during intercourse, before you actually wish it to happen.

What are the causes of premature ejaculation?

According to studies done by The Mayo Clinic, the exact cause is not known. Further research has resulted in doctors, who once believed that PE was entirely psychological, that it is more complex, and a possible combination of psychological and biological factors.

Psychological issues such as stress, guilt or depression, may add to the PE, or it could be as a result of a medical cause like hormonal problems, an underlying health issue, or even as a side effect of certain medications.

Some of the main biological causes which may contribute to premature ejaculation:

  • Abnormal hormone levels such as low testosterone, which is a cause of erectile dysfunction, may also be linked to premature ejaculation.
  • Possible malfunction of brain neuro transmitters which convey messages to parts of the body, not communication well with ejaculatory process.
  • An abnormal reflex function of the ejaculatory system.
  • Certain thyroid problems, particularly an overactive thyroid gland which produces excessive hormones, that in turns slows down testosterone production, creating an excellent climate for PE to develop. It has been estimated that about 70% of men suffering from an overactive thyroid experience premature ejaculation, and many find it difficult to maintain an erection.
  • Prostatitis, which is inflammation, or an infection of the prostate gland, is a serious condition which, if not treated, can result in severe premature ejaculation.
  • Hereditary issues. Recent research has indicated that premature ejaculation is a disorder that may run in families. This tells us that PE has a genetic basis, whereby your risk for the problem could be inherited – just as a risk for heart disease or cancer would be hereditary.

Are you dealing with premature ejaculation?

If you are struggling with this distressing, often embarrassing sexual affliction – you are definitely not alone. A study published in Drug Discovery Today noted that 20 to 30 percent of men experience PE, a problem that can affect men of any age.

A sexual issue can sometimes be a sign of an underlying health problem which has not yet manifested itself. If you are concerned about problems in the bedroom, it is critical to visit your doctor to rule out, or identify, any lurking health concerns. This may be very difficult for you to do, as men often have privacy issues when it comes to sexual problems, many times not even willing to discuss it with their wives or partners.

Premature ejaculation is a treatable condition, and before it gets out of hand, and becomes a serious relationship issue, a visit to your doctor may be just the breakthrough to put your mind more at ease.

Treatment options for premature ejaculation

The good news is that PE, over time, sometimes gets better on its own, often as quickly as it may have started – and you may not need treatment at all.

But if you are serious about normalising your sexual life, here are some treatment options which can work for you:

  • Doctors often recommend counselling or behavioural therapy which may reduce anxiety, depression, and other emotional factors related to PE.
  • Practising relaxation techniques regularly may also help you delay ejaculation.
  • Men who are able to stop, or cut down, on the use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, stand a good chance of better-controlling ejaculation.
  • Certain anti-depressants and pain medications, who have a side effect of inhibiting orgasm, is also used to delay ejaculation.
  • If you aslo suffer from erectile dysfunction, it is advisable to first deal with that particular problem.
