Can aspartame affect your testosterone levels?

by | Feb 22, 2022 | Articles, Aspartame

What is aspartame?

Aspartame is a group name for artificial sweeteners which are in practically in all foods today. Products such as xylitol, canderel, Nutra Sweet, Equal and selati, (to name but a few) are included. The common ingredient in aspartame is a chemical known as excitotoxin. Popular items like diet sodas, chocolates, anything labelled diet, low sugar, low calorie, as well as processed foods, all contain excitotoxin in the form of aspartame.

Excitotoxins have been associated with neurological disorders (brain nerve-cell issues) and also impact the hormonal system. Recent studies by the LT Men’s Clinic in the US revealed that findings on aspartame suggest that the artificial sweetener may also be responsible for growing issues of low testosterone – low T.

Side effects of aspartame

Some common side effects of aspartame:

  • Extensive research has shown that aspartame is a strong carcinogenic agent which raises the risk of developing cancer.
  • Artificial sweeteners do not help with weight loss. Studies revealed that people drinking large amounts of diet soda daily, were 3 times as likely to develop higher risks of developing stroke or dementia, than people who only drank it sparingly, such as once a week or less.
  • The chemical ingredient excitotoxin in aspartame has been linked to neurological issues such as irritable moods, anxiety and depression.
  • If you are prone to headaches, aspartame has been associated with bad headaches and migraines.
  • Several studies have linked aspartame to an increased appetite, which may lead to unwanted weight gain and overweight related issues.
  • Recent findings suggest that aspartame may also play a part in low testosterone issues.

The first step is to eliminate aspartame from your diet to obviate the possible side effects and deal with low T problems.

Good news

The good news is that there are plenty of natural sweeteners which do not contain aspartame. These are excellent for diabetics, many of whom are only allowed an almost zero sugar intake. Here are some items which do not contain aspartame:

  • Any herbal-bases sweeteners
  • Stevia, selati
  • Splenda is an excellent choice, as it has no calories, is very sweet, has no after taste or side effects, and promotes weight loss
  • Drinks include coke lite, sprite zero, ginger ale, and mountain dew
  • Fruit options such as orange juice, mixed berry, cherry and minute maid unsweetened
  • Many energy drinks also contain aspartame, especially those labelled low calories or sugar-free

Sometimes it may be difficult to consume only aspartame-free items, and often it may be absolutely impossible. However, experts agree that the lower your intake of aspartame, the less chance you have of suffering any of the harmful side effects.

Why are food manufacturers so fond of aspartame?

Excitotoxin substances such as aspartame and other synthetic sweeteners, have been used for decades by food and beverage manufacturers to pump up the flavour of their products, and make them more attractive and desirable to consumers. They maintained that the additives were not a danger to health.

However, in recent years, health experts have come to regard excitotoxins with suspicion and have initiated intensive studies to investigate the possible side effects.

Several disturbing facts have already come to light about these widely used chemicals, which is pervasive in most of the food we eat, and what we drink.
