Do you have appearance anxiety?

Have you ever felt so self-conscious about your body that you have on many occasions, avoided sex? Sex researchers have noted that more and more women worldwide are suffering from appearance anxiety which now has more of an impact on sexual functioning than menopause.

Studies have shown that there are many ways to tell if your body image is affecting your sex life. Here are some questions you can ask yourself as to whether or not you have issues:

  • Do you always want the lights off during sex so your partner cannot see your body?
  • Are you too self-conscious about your body to enjoy sexual encounters?
  • Are you in the habit of putting on cover-clothing to prevent your partner seeing areas you are embarrassed about?
  • Do you feel you would enjoy sex more if you lost some weight?
  • When you make love do you worry about certain areas of your body you feel are just too big, like your thighs, stomach or even breasts?
  • When having sex, although your partner says he loves your body, do you secretly feel that he wishes he was making love with someone else?
  • If you are not enjoying sex, do you have a strong feeling that it is because your body is not good enough for your partner?

If you have answered yes to any of the questions, then the chances are that you have a low self-esteem problem, which is affecting your sex life, and may be putting your relationship in jeopardy.

Some solutions to bedroom body image problems

If appearance anxiety is getting the best of you in the bedroom, the worst thing you can do is page through a women’s magazine for answers. You will only see pictures of slim, trim sexy women which will only draw more of your attention to your perceived flaws. Women are bombarded by the media with ideas that unless you are a size zero you are not sexy. This is very far from the truth as not every man wants a stick-like figure. If you have a curvy figure with a bulge here and there, consider the fact that it might be just what your man wants – no matter what you may think.

Studies have indicated that it is possible for body conscious women to stop worrying about how they look, and enjoy a satisfying sex life. This is not about diet or exercise. It is more about a change of attitude, and learning to take control of thoughts which may be in danger of becoming obsessive. Close your mind off to a running commentary about what your partner may be thinking about your body, try to relax, and concentrate on what you are feeling when making love.

Remember that body image did not influence the decision to enter a relationship, neither for him, nor for you. If you have some specific body concerns such as being overweight, you will benefit from treatments that target these areas. Just knowing that you are doing something positive about the situation, will give your self-esteem and self-confidence a boost.

Although both men and women both have body image problems, it would appear that these issues bother women more than men.

For a good result, if your partner says he is happy with your body – take him at his word and get busy rebuilding your relationship and your sex life.
