What is sexual addiction?

Sexual addiction is an inability to control sexual urges which may lead to damaged relationships and a poor quality of life. Studies have indicated that a person who has sexual addiction is obsessed with sex, or has an abnormally high sex drive. A full-blown sexual addict’s thoughts are continuously concentrated on sexual activities to the point where it impacts badly on normal life processes, making it difficult to function in social situations.

Diagnosing sexual addiction is not a simple matter, as people have different levels of sex drive, and different levels of libido. For example, someone whose partner simply has a higher sex drive, might incorrectly consider the partner as being a sex addict.

This applies to both men and women, and there is a difference between a strong libido and sex addiction.

Common symptoms of sexual addiction

Here are some behaviours and attitudes which may determine whether a sex addiction is present:

  • Inability to control sexual urges and respect boundaries of others engaged in a sexual encounter.
  • No emotional satisfaction from sexual activities, often leading to a string of new relationships in search of romance and love.
  • An awareness by the individual that things are not right lead to feelings of guilt and shame.
  • Many failed attempts to control, reduce or stop behaviour and constant thinking about sex.
  • Withdrawal symptoms of rage or anger if one is not able to engage in the addiction.
  • Irresponsible risk taking even if there may be health consequences such as sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and possibly also HIV contracting danger.

If not treated, compulsive sexual behaviour can lead to complications such as relationship and family breakdowns, STI’s, and legal hassles if the sexual act is judged illegal or publicly disruptive.

Treatment for sex addiction

Sex addiction is not easy to treat as a person with sex addiction will not readily admit that there is a problem. Current treatment options are designed to reduce excessive sexual urges, and encourage the forming of more natural relationships.

Medications such as Prozac may be prescribed to reduce urges, but the American FDA has not approved these drugs for the treatment of sexual addiction.

Medical experts agree that the most favourable treatment for the addiction is by means of behavioural therapy such as hypnosis, which is able to access the subconscious mind and create a new mindset. How hypnotherapy can help:

  • By bypassing the conscious mind, hypnosis can change the way you respond to sexual thoughts, and help you move past the old patterns of behaviour, by reprogramming the subconscious mind by way of positive suggestions.
  • You will learn how to think clearly about the consequences of your behaviour, and begin making choices that are healthy for you.
  • Take control of your mind and body and not allow intrusive sexual thoughts to affect you.
  • Hypnosis will teach you how to use your sexual energy in a healthy and more fulfilling way, which be of benefit repairing relationships which may have broken down.

There is no magic way to overcome an addiction, but by admitting that there is a problem, you will have taken the first step towards a successful outcome of getting rid of your sexual addiction. You will be able to decide when you want to have sex, and no longer be controlled by how you feel.
